Autism Toolkit

Autism Spectrum Disorder refers to a range of conditions which includes Asperger's Syndrome, autism, and others; in this toolkit we use the word autism to talk about everyone on the autism spectrum.

Autism is a common neurological disorder characterized by a profound difference in how information is processed and analyzed by the brain.

Autism includes many strengths.  Students with autism may be

  • resourceful and interested in learning
  • accurate and pay attention to detail
  • honest and have a strong sense of social justice
  • reliable and conscientious
  • logical and original with problem solving
  • good with routine and clear expectations

Autism is often understood through differences in communication and social skills.  Autism is also often differently understood; this toolkit offers a focus on autistic strengths.

This Toolkit is specifically for college (or university) applicants and students.  Explore to find some information and ideas that are useful to you.  Not everything you read here will apply to you or your experiences, but that's okay.

Use the menu on the left or the links within the text to navigate and learn more about how to use your autism strengths, plan effectively, or manage challenges to find success in your studies and in the world of work.

Toolkit for Faculty and Staff provides additional strategies for supporting autistic students in the classroom and in the college community.
