Student Loans

A loan is money that you have to pay back.  Canada and Nova Scotia governments offer loans to help students pay for tuition, books, and living expenses.

If you are a student with a disability, you MUST apply for a student loan to be eligible for disability-related grants.

When you apply for a student loan, you are actually applying for three things

  • A loan
  • Disability-related grants
  • Funding for disability related equipment (like technology) or services (like note taking)

There is one application for both the Canada and Nova Scotia Student Loans. Apply online. If you are a student with a disability, check the box that says YES you wish to declare yourself as a student with a permanent disability. Submit a completed Student Loan Medical Assessment Form along with any other required documents.

Helpful Hints

Do not send in your Medical Assessment Form or other documents until the Student Loan Office has received your online application.  They must receive your application before receiving your documents.

  • Send the Student Loan Office the original copy of your Student Loan Medical Assessment Form.
  • Make sure you keep a copy of your application details and Student Loan Medical Assessment Form for your own records.
  • You can also share your Medical Assessment Form with a Learning Strategist at NSCC to help plan academic accommodations, services, and supports.
